The fuel station breakup: how fast a home EV charger actually pays for itself in Perth

Real numbers using Perth pump prices, Synergy tariffs and a typical rooftop solar setup. Most Candela installs pay themselves off inside three years.

The question we get asked more than any other: how long until this thing pays for itself. Fair question, and the maths is more generous than most people expect once you actually run the numbers on a Perth household.

Here is the honest version, using current Synergy tariffs, a real Perth pump price from November 2025, and average driving distances pulled from ABS commuter data for the metro area.

The petrol side of the ledger

A 60 litre tank at $2.10 a litre is $126. If you top up every ten days, that is around $4,600 a year straight out of your account. Push it to a fortnightly fill and you are still north of $3,200.

None of that number goes into your house. It leaves your suburb, then leaves the country. That framing matters, because the same money spent on charging hardware stays put and keeps working for the next decade.

The electricity side

Perth is close to the best EV city on earth for one reason: sunlight is basically free after 10am. A 6.6kW solar array in Duncraig or Currambine will push out enough surplus midday to fully charge most EVs three or four times a week at zero marginal cost.

For the nights you actually need grid power, Synergy's EV Add On sits around 8c a kilowatt hour between 11pm and 7am. A full charge on a Model Y from 20 to 80 percent costs about $3.60 at that rate. Petrol equivalent for the same range: $22.

The break even

A fully installed 7.4kW Zappi or Tesla Wall Connector from us sits around $1,600 to $2,200 depending on cable run and switchboard work. Against $3,000 to $4,000 in annual fuel savings, payback lands between seven months and thirteen months for a household that drives normal Perth distances.

After that, every year the car is on your driveway is money moving off the fuel bill and onto the mortgage instead.
