Decoding the spec sheet

What each of these numbers actually means for you.

Charger spec sheets are written for electricians. Here is the same information in the language we use on the driveway.

kW

How fast the charger pushes energy into the car. 7 kW adds roughly 40 km of range an hour, 22 kW about 130 km if your car can take it.

Single vs three phase

Most Perth homes are single phase, which caps you at 7.4 kW. Three phase homes can run 22 kW, but only some cars accept it on AC.

Solar sync

Clamps on your mains read live export and the charger only draws what the roof is making, so you charge on free power instead of selling it back.

OCPP 1.6

An open protocol. It means the unit can be managed by third party software later instead of being locked to one app.

Load balancing

The charger backs off when the house is drawing hard, so you do not trip the main switch on a 40 degree day.

IP rating

Weather sealing. IP55 is fine under eaves, IP65 and IP66 handle a fully exposed coastal wall.

Tethered vs socket

Tethered means the cable is attached and always there. A socket keeps the wall tidy but you carry the lead in the boot.

RFID

Tap-card access control. Useful for shared driveways, strata and workplaces, rarely needed at home.
