Winter solar and your EV: what Perth panels really produce June to August

Every autumn we get the same question from new EV owners with solar: will the panels still charge the car in winter? The short answer is yes, mostly. The longer answer is worth understanding because it changes how you set your charger up for three months of the year.

The real winter numbers

A typical 6.6kW Perth system makes 28 to 32kWh on a clear summer day. In June and July that drops to 14 to 18kWh, roughly half. Cloudy stretches can push individual days down to 8 to 10kWh.

Here is the part people miss: the average Perth commute uses 6 to 8kWh a day. Even a mediocre winter day covers the commute with room for the house. Winter solar is not the problem. The timing is, because the sun sets by 5:30 and peak household demand lands right when generation stops.

The winter charging setup that works

• If you are home during the day, set the charger to solar surplus mode and let it sip whatever the roof makes between 10am and 2pm. Even 5kWh of free solar a day is 35kWh a week.
• If the car is at work all day, switch strategy: charge overnight on the Synergy EV plan's off peak rate (23:00 to 06:00) instead of chasing thin winter sun you cannot use.
• Weekends are your solar days. A Saturday and Sunday on solar surplus mode will bank 20 to 30kWh of free driving.

Perth averages more than eight hours of sunshine a day even in July, the highest of any Australian capital. Winter EV charging here is still cheaper than summer petrol by a wide margin. The grey months are a tuning exercise, not a dealbreaker.
