The smart home flex: pulling your EV charger into Apple Home, Google or Home Assistant

For the tech obsessed. What is actually possible today, what still needs a workaround, and what is worth setting up.

Most premium EV chargers today speak OCPP, the open protocol that public charging networks use. That opens the door to genuine home automation instead of the walled garden apps.

The three usable paths

  • Home Assistant: full read and write control over Zappi, Wallbox and Tesla Wall Connector. Set triggers, dashboards, notifications, anything.
  • Apple Home: works via Homebridge or Matter bridges. Read only for most, write control on Wallbox via community plugins.
  • Google Home: cleanest for scheduling. Route commands like 'charge the car tonight' through routines.

Automations that are actually worth building

Porch lights flash green when the car hits 80 percent. Push notification if a charging session is interrupted. Auto pause charging when the oven is turned on to avoid tripping the main breaker. Auto start when solar generation crosses 3 kilowatts.

None of these are strictly necessary. All of them make the household feel considered, which is really what smart home is for.
