Architectural EV charging: pedestals, timber backdrops and carport integration

For homes where the charger simply cannot live on a beige wall. Design ideas we have actually built across Perth's premium suburbs.

Some homes do not have a convenient garage wall to bolt a box to. Mid century Applecross builds, split level Cottesloe places, and the newer Nedlands carports we work on all have the same problem: the charger has to become part of the architecture, not fight it.

Three approaches we have used repeatedly.

The freestanding pedestal

A powder coated steel post between the two parking bays, painted to match the fascia. The charger sits on top at hip height, the cable is either coiled inside a discreet holster or hidden entirely.

Best for double carports where wall access is bad but a cable run through the slab is possible.

The timber backdrop panel

A single spotted gum or blackbutt panel mounted where the charger goes, sized larger than the unit itself. Turns a piece of hardware into a considered detail. Best paired with a small matte finish unit like the Wallbox Pulsar or a Tesla Wall Connector in white.

The recessed niche

For new builds and serious renovations, we work with the builder to create a shallow niche in the wall so the charger sits flush. Cable run comes up through the slab, no conduit visible. The wall looks like it always had a socket there.

This one takes coordination with the builder before the frame goes up, but it is the cleanest outcome available.
